April (I Love You)
Composed by Mark Sirett
Voicing: SSA Instrumentation: piano Catalog number: AMP 0998 Price: $2.10
April (I Love You) is a setting of a poem originally entitled I love you by one of
America's most celebrated authors, Sara Teasdale (1884–1933). Born in St Louis,
this accomplished and much admired poet won the Columbia Poetry Prize, (later
renamed the Pulitzer Prize), as well as the annual prize from the Poetry Society of
America for her 1917 collection Love Songs. Although highly successful during her
lifetime, she was troubled with ill health, and in later years plagued with loneliness
and depression. Her works are characterized by a beautiful clarity and simplicity,
evocative emotion and lyricism.
Mark Sirett is a native of Kingston, Ontario and holds both masters and doctoral
degrees in choral conducting and pedagogy from the University of Iowa. He has
taught at the University of Alberta, the University of Western Ontario and Queen's
University. Sirett is the Founding Artistic Director of the Cantabile Choirs of
Kingston, which since 1996 is an award–winning educational program that
embraces seven choirs and almost 300 singers of all ages.
